Punta Cana, Bávaro and Uvero Alto face east onto the open Atlantic, into the trade wind: a reef off Bávaro and Cabeza de Toro takes some of the waves, Macao and Uvero Alto have none and get real surf. This coast is also where sargassum lands, mostly from spring to autumn. Bayahibe and Saona Island are on the south coast, on the Caribbean, out of the swell and usually flat.
The trade wind blows from the east most of the year, onshore on the Punta Cana coast and along the shore at Bayahibe.
