The mainland coast faces east, straight into the trade wind, but the Mesoamerican reef a few hundred metres out takes the swell, so most beaches have small waves. Cancún's hotel zone faces the open sea and gets more waves than Playa del Carmen. Cozumel's west coast is in the island's lee and is usually flat; its east coast takes the full wind. Sargassum seaweed arrives on the east-facing beaches from spring to autumn.
The trade wind blows from the east or southeast most of the year; northers (nortes) bring north wind from November to March.

Satellite risk from NOAA, data of 2026-10-03: likely at 15 beaches and heavy at 6 beaches. The satellite sees seaweed at sea and on the coast in stretches of a few kilometres; it cannot see whether a beach was cleaned this morning. The Quintana Roo sargassum network posts a daily traffic light per beach.
Cozumel tomorrow: 2 cruise ships (≈5,500 guests ashore at the peak); the beach clubs south of San Miguel fill up. Cozumel cruise days on Caribbean Port Day.
